Nyanji
(Tobias Chingozha)

Approximately 3 hours Northeast from Harare by bus there is an area called Murewa. The neighborhood is dotted with small villages and, like the other Zimbabwean counties, a village is circled around a huge stone. Murewa in Zimbabwean Shona means "monkey." Monkeys are quite respected and admired in Shona culture. Though looking and acting different, Shona consider animals and humans to be equal.

Murewa is the place where Shona culture in Zimbabwe originiated. There is no chaotic atmosphere like that of Harare here. It is a place where the laughter of cheerful Shona people can be heard everywhere.

Tobias Chingozha grew up in Murewa and loves his hometown. He is often refered to as "nyanji" here, meaning expert. He is certainly an expert when it comes to mbira.
